Wadhwani Hub at IIT Bombay to Accelerate AI-Driven Innovation in Biosciences

Wadhwani Hub

Mumbai: The Wadhwani Foundation, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), has launched the Wadhwani Hub for Biosciences, Bioengineering, Health and Medicine, along with the Wadhwani Innovation and Translation Centre (WITC), to establish India as a global innovation hub in biosciences, biotechnology, and healthcare.

Unveiled during the YUGM Innovation Conclave 2025 in New Delhi, this landmark initiative forms part of the ₹1,400 crore national collaboration between the Government of India and the Wadhwani Foundation to build future-ready innovation infrastructure.

These projects aim to drive socioeconomic development by accelerating deep-tech research and creating jobs through entrepreneurship and translational research.

Backed by ₹300 crore in funding – including a ₹100 crore philanthropic grant from the Wadhwani Foundation – the Wadhwani Hub will be housed in a 120,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility at IIT Bombay.

It will host 10 external research centres and support over 40 faculty members and 500 PhD and postdoctoral researchers focused on biosciences, medical technologies, and health systems, with an emphasis on AI and machine learning.

The Wadhwani Innovation and Translation Centre (WITC), nested within the Wadhwani Hub, will fast-track lab-to-market research, support startup incubation, and enable commercialisation of scientific breakthroughs. Together, these entities are expected to catalyse India’s vision for self-reliance in critical healthcare technologies and boost its role in the global deep-tech ecosystem.

Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended the efforts, stating, “The Wadhwani Hub at IIT Bombay is a testament to India’s unwavering commitment to fostering innovation, skill development, and impactful research for a Viksit Bharat by 2047.”

Dr Romesh Wadhwani, founder of the Wadhwani Foundation and an IIT Bombay alumnus, remarked, “The Wadhwani Hub and WITC will help India lead in biosciences and healthcare, while generating economic opportunity, jobs, and solutions that improve lives.”

Wadhwani Hub Set to Redefine India’s Leadership in Medical Innovation

With a sharp focus on translational outcomes, the Wadhwani Hub is set to redefine India’s leadership in medical innovation, advance digital healthcare, and strengthen public-private collaboration in science and technology.
